What is Gothic Lolita?

Design by Meredith Cavaness Corning

I was browsing fashion trends and photos the other day as I always do, and came across a fashion subculture originating in Japan called "Gothic Lolita." It is inspired by the Victorian and Rococo eras and adds the gothic element of design which makes for some very interesting pieces, I must say. The look consists of mainly knee length skirts or dresses, headpieces, blouse, petticoat, knee high socks/stockings, and rockinghorse platform shoes. When the gothic element is added you see the Lolita pieces that are mainly black with accents of other colors. It is a fashion statement that says "I would rather dress cute as opposed to sexy." Goths see the "Gothic Lolita" style of dress as a kindred spirit and some may even own a dress or two. The Lolita trend came along years ago and exhibits a very demure quality. Gothic lolita is a substyle of Lolita. Gothic Lolita is characterized by a harmonization of the macabre, by way of bats, skulls, and the color black with chasteness through the clothings bell-shape, the covering up of the skin, and the ever present porceline doll-like cuteness. I am intrigued with these designs and plan to start sketching some of my own designs. The quality of the material and design are such that the clothing tends to be quite pricey and many Gothic Lolitas sew their own. I may attempt this in the future and will let you know the outcome! Until then go check out the pics on this all Goth Lolita site:
